Distress Signals

In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000). From a mobile, 112 also connects to Triple Zero.

The rule of three

Three of anything is a distress signal: three whistle blasts, three torch flashes, three fires in a triangle. Signal, wait a minute, repeat. SOS in Morse code is three short, three long, three short.

Ground-to-air shapes

Lay these out in the open, at least 2.5 metres long, in a colour that stands out.

  • V: I need help
  • X: I need medical help
  • Y: yes
  • N: no
  • Arrow: travelling in this direction

When an aircraft is overhead

  • Both arms straight up: yes, I need help.
  • One arm up and one arm down: no, I don't need help.
  • If the pilot rocks the wings, they have seen you and understood.

Going remote

  • Tell someone your route and when you will be back.
  • Carry a registered distress beacon (PLB). Registering with AMSA is free.
  • Stay with your vehicle. It is far easier to spot from the air than a person.
  • Never light a signal fire on a total fire ban day.
