X-BULL Gen 3.0 Recovery Tracks, 2 Pairs with Mounting Pins, Red

Four full-length X-BULL Gen 3.0 recovery tracks in red for getting unstuck in sand, mud and snow, supplied with two sets of mounting pins to carry them on a roof rack or platform.

Each track measures 1060 x 310 x 60mm and is moulded from reinforced nylon. U-shaped cleats on the top face bite into the tyre tread, and grips on the underside stop the track sliding away. The tapered ends are angled to slide in under a tyre and double as a shovel for clearing sand or mud from in front of the wheels.

The supplier rates the tracks to 10 tonnes load on flat ground. Gen 3.0 is X-BULL's longer track (about 106cm, versus about 91cm for Gen 2.0), with a revised cleat layout the supplier says is more wear-resistant.

Getting bogged on an unsealed road is one of the most likely ways to end up stranded, whether you are heading off-grid or leaving early ahead of a flood or fire. Recovery tracks let you self-recover without a second vehicle or a winch anchor point.

Traction aids only. The 10 tonne figure is a supplier load rating for a track lying flat on the ground under a tyre. Recovery tracks are traction aids. Do not use them as ramps, jacking bases, or to bridge holes, ditches or gaps, and do not use them beyond the manufacturer's stated use.

Keep people well clear of the vehicle's wheels while driving onto the tracks. A spinning tyre can flick a track out with real force. Use gentle, steady throttle and avoid wheelspin, which wears the cleats quickly. In sand, lowering tyre pressures first makes a big difference.

Attach the leashes before use so a track buried in sand or mud is easy to find and pull out.

When roof-mounting, check that your roof rack or platform is rated for the added weight, and check the mounting pins and nuts are tight before each trip and after rough corrugations. The mounting hardware has an anti-rust coating, so it may look darker than in the photos.

After use, rinse off sand, mud and salt, let the tracks dry, and check them for cracks or broken cleats before packing them away. Colours and packaging may vary slightly from the images.
